Temporal partitioning of diurnal bird and nocturnal small mammal visitors to a winter flowering endemic succulent

چکیده

Floral nectar is an important attractant and reward for visitors, often produced in synchrony with peak activity of pollinators. Aloe peglerae flowers winter, previous studies have shown that it pollinated primarily by diurnal generalist birds, small mammals making additional contributions to pollination at night. Nectar during the day main but rewards available are unknown. This paper investigates availability peglerae, because may be feeding on remaining, or freshly produced, over a 24-hour period was measured screened unscreened plants (n = ten per treatment), associated partitioning visits birds nocturnal assessed. constantly 24-hours, different quantities. volume (nectar availability) (standing crop) plants, significantly higher early morning after sunrise, compared all other sampling periods period. concentration did not vary averaging 11.5 ± 0.4% w/w (unscreened) across entire Peaks guilds occurred (i.e. mammals) when high. has daytime production, its primary pollinators most active, continual, albeit reduced, night attracts mammals. An assessment of spatio-temporal relationships between nocturnal bird migration traffic rates and diurnal bird stopover density.

BACKGROUND Daily magnitudes and fluxes of landbird migration are often measured via nocturnal traffic rates aloft or diurnal densities within terrestrial habitats during stopover. However, these measures are not consistently correlated and at times reveal opposing trends. For this reason we sought to determine how comparison methods (daily magnitude or daily flux), nocturnal monitoring tools (w...

Home range and use of diurnal shelters by the Etendeka round-eared sengi, a newly discovered Namibian endemic desert mammal

To understand habitat use by the newly described Etendeka round-eared sengi (Macroscelides micus) in northwestern Namibia, we radio-tracked five individuals for nearly a month. Home ranges (100% convex polygons) in the rocky desert habitat were remarkably large (mean 14.9 ha) when compared to sengi species in more mesic habitats (<1.5 ha). The activity pattern of M. micus was strictly nocturnal...

Small mammal distribution and diversity in a plague endemic area in West Usambara Mountains, Tanzania.

Small mammals play a role in plague transmission as hosts in all plague endemic areas. Information on distribution and diversity of small mammals is therefore important for plague surveillance and control in such areas. The objective of this study was to investigate small mammals' diversity and their distribution in plague endemic area in the West Usambara Mountains in north-eastern Tanzania. L...
